A cemetery of their own: Egyptian queens gained this privilege only at the beginning of the Nineteenth Dynasty, during the Ramesside period. The Valley of the Queens reveals much about famous Egyptian women's lives, their rise and fall, duties and expectations for the afterlife. Every tomb has distinctive decoration, and several are true works of art. Why were queens suddenly buried separately? How did their tombs differ from kings' tombs and from each other? What afterlife did they hope for?
The ‘Place of Beauty’, where Ramesside queens dream their eternal dreams, can answer these questions too.
Paulína Šútorová, MA, studied Egyptology at Swansea University in Wales. Her studies, research and articles in popular-science publications focus on hieroglyphic texts, Egyptian epigraphy and literature, and the history and art of the New Kingdom (1550–1069 BCE). She specialises in New Kingdom queens, the subject of her doctoral research at Trier University in Germany. She has participated in excavations at Tell el-Retaba and is involved in the South Asasif Conservation Project and the Amenhotep III Colossus Project.
