The desire for power is as old as humanity. Ancient Egyptian history contains many cases of women as well as men succumbing to it. In the royal harem, queens devised ambitious plans using intrigue, crime, murder and even magic. What do surviving texts from the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms reveal?
Paulína Šútorová, MA, studied Egyptology at Swansea University in Wales. Her studies, research and popular-science articles focus on hieroglyphic texts, Egyptian epigraphy and literature, and the history and art of the New Kingdom (1550–1069 BCE). She specialises in New Kingdom queens, the subject of her doctoral research at Trier University in Germany. She has participated in excavations at Tell el-Retaba and is involved in the South Asasif Conservation Project and the Amenhotep III Colossus Project.
