The lecture introduces society in the age of the pyramid builders. Tomb inscriptions reveal much about the occupations of Egyptians who lived around 4,500 years ago. We will learn which offices they held at the royal court and who cared for the pharaoh, a living god. We will also examine powerful family clans whose influence grew so much that the king arranged marriage alliances with them through female members of the royal family.
Veronika Dulíková is a researcher at the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University. Since 2010, she has regularly participated in excavations on the Czech concession at Abusir. She focuses on society, material culture and administration in the age of the pyramid builders, the Old Kingdom, approximately 2700–2100 BCE. Working with mathematicians, she uses complex network analysis to explore how Egyptian society functioned.
