The idea of an inanimate object possessing a soul, mind, feelings or superhuman abilities has existed in all human societies since time immemorial. The desire to create living objects inspired moving statues in ancient Egypt, legends of mechanical animals and people in ancient Greece, and divinatory automata in India and China. Fascination with artificial humans continued through early modern inventions and the machine age. Today, we see superhuman abilities in emerging artificial-intelligence systems. This lecture traces changing views of artificial life and considers possibilities that may await us.
PhDr. Ing. Tomáš Gál, PhD., studied Computer Science and Religious Studies and teaches at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, Comenius University. He examines the effects of existing and emerging technologies on culture and society. He belongs to e-tika.sk, a group developing and sharing knowledge about the ethical and social dimensions of information technology.
