Ancient Egyptians are often wrongly described as obsessed with death, but they certainly devoted considerable resources to securing life after death. This lecture explores the architecture, material culture, rituals and religious preparations required, the funeral itself and life in the next world.
Marie Peterková Hlouchová researches Old Kingdom religion and wooden coffins from the Old Kingdom, First Intermediate Period and first millennium BCE, including examples found at Abusir. She has participated in expeditions to Egypt and Sudan since 2015. At the time of the lecture, she was principal investigator of Czech Science Foundation project 23-04989S, ‘Ancient Egyptian Burial Containers of the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period: Evolution, Contextualisation and Significance’.
