About the lecture
Composite fantastic beings are among the most distinctive features of ancient Egyptian civilisation and religious thought. Egyptians believed that gods, fantastic beings and demons governed life on earth and in the underworld. Their partly human and partly animal qualities, actions, diversity and often terrifying nature were reflected in their appearance. This fearsome exterior expressed their power and often translated their combined attributes visually. Although Egyptians feared them, they also sought to control them and win their favour. We will examine important beings such as sphinxes, griffins and animal demons, and their roles in Egyptian religion and mythology.
Dr. phil. Veronika Verešová graduated in Classical Archaeology from Trnava University and in Egyptology from the University of Vienna, where she earned her doctorate at the Institute of Classical Archaeology. She is a board member of the Aigyptos Foundation and a researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Slovak Academy of Sciences. Her interests include the Aegean Bronze Age, Egypt's Second Intermediate Period and New Kingdom, and the history, material culture and intercultural relations of the Bronze Age eastern Mediterranean. Since 2008, she has belonged to the Polish-Slovak mission at Tell el-Retaba.
