Did you know that ancient Egyptians treated baldness by rubbing crocodile fat on the scalp, or used eel heated in oil against foot odour? This lecture examines medicine thousands of years ago, without modern technology. Reading medical papyri and studying mummies, we will explore how Egyptians understood and treated disease. We will also discuss physicians' training, their tools and knowledge of human anatomy, and specialisms such as dentistry, ophthalmology and surgery.
Silvia Štubňová Nigrelli, PhD., holds a temporary position in the Department of Egyptology and Assyriology at Brown University in Providence, USA, where she earned her doctorate in 2020. She also studied Egyptology in Liverpool (2009–2012) and Leiden (2012–2013). Her research focuses on ancient Egyptian language, literature, everyday life and religion.
