Valley temples were monumental gateways to the pyramid complexes of Egyptian rulers. Fieldwork conducted by the Charles University expedition around Nyuserre's valley temple in 2019 allows researchers, after almost 120 years, to return to questions concerning the final resting place of the sixth ruler of the Fifth Dynasty, King Nyuserre of Upper and Lower Egypt. Preliminary results will be assessed in relation to monumental funerary architecture, especially valley temples, in the age of the pyramid builders and within the broader development of Egyptian society.
Jaromír Krejčí, of the Czech Institute of Egyptology at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, is an Egyptologist with extensive archaeological experience in Egypt. He specialises in Egyptian archaeology and history from the late fourth to the mid-second millennium BCE, as well as the development of ancient Egyptian architecture. He has regularly participated in fieldwork in Egypt since 1991, particularly the study of buildings at the royal necropolis of Abusir. His recent research also examines the solar cult and its manifestations in third-millennium BCE Egypt. He has long been involved in teaching at his home institution.
