About the lecture
Maya hieroglyphic writing can be regarded as the most sophisticated writing system used in the Americas. No other culture developed writing to the same extent. Approximately 5,000 surviving texts are available today, varying in their number of hieroglyphic blocks. Most occur on archaeological objects such as stelae, panels, pottery and portable artefacts, as well as murals and books. The lecturer explains how the script works, the distinctive features of calendar records, and records of events that alarmed the world in 2012.
About the lecturer: He studied Religious Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Comenius University in Bratislava, where he works as an assistant professor and researcher in the Department of Comparative Religious Studies. His main focus is Maya culture, specialising in Mesoamerican codices, epigraphy, iconography and archaeoastronomy. His dissertation offered a comprehensive analysis of the Paris Codex. He participates in fieldwork at Uaxactun, Guatemala.
