About the lecture
Even in twenty-first-century Slovakia, the exclamation ‘do Paroma’ survives as a reference to an ancient pre-Christian deity. Surprisingly, the beliefs of our ancestors are not as dead as one might imagine more than a thousand years after Christianisation. Since the 1960s worldwide, and the 1990s in Slovakia, Europe's pre-Christian faiths have experienced a ‘rebirth’. Although modern Paganism remains relatively small, its supporters are steadily increasing. What are its most popular forms worldwide and in Slovakia? What do modern Pagans believe, and how does their faith differ from Christianity?
About the lecturer: Michal Puchovský is a doctoral researcher at the Department of Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno. He studies new religious movements, particularly modern Paganism, specialising in Pagan music from sociological and musicological perspectives. He regularly writes accessible scholarly articles on religion and popular culture for the Slovak cultural-critical monthly Kapitál, reviews books for Knižní Díra and writes about music for ROCKER.sk.
