About the lecture
This contribution outlines the different actors encompassed by ‘mosque’ in its broader sense. They include the urban-planning context of the building and the various groups using it for different purposes. The third corner of this triangle consists of association leaders and their motivations, directed both inward towards the association and outward towards mainstream society. The talk also critiques evolutionary models of the assumed stages of community transformation during the one-sided integration of Muslims into Western societies.
About the lecturer: Martin Klapetek, PhD., studies Islam in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, focusing on Muslim integration, mosque construction and funerary issues. He is an assistant professor at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Faculty of Theology, University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice.
