About the lecture
Antiquity was characterised by a plurality of religious cults honouring male and female deities. Many ceremonies had a sexual dimension, and some religious rituals involved prostitution dedicated to goddesses of love and fertility. The lecture examines prostitution in relation to the cults of selected goddesses and gods, focusing on temple and sacred prostitution in the ancient world and the analysis of artistic evidence.
About the lecturer: Mgr. Dominika Kleinová is a full-time doctoral researcher at the Institute of Historical Sciences, Faculty of Arts, University of Pardubice. She studies the cultural history of prostitution and gender history. Her dissertation examines prostitution in interwar Slovakia and the effects of legislation combating venereal diseases on sex workers' lives during that period.
