The lecture explores the importance and development of the Western Desert oases throughout ancient Egyptian history, from the earliest evidence to the early Christian period. Kharga, Dakhla, Farafra, Bahariya, Siwa and smaller oases in the so-called Libyan Desert played important economic and religious roles at different times. Their development can be traced through written evidence and architectural and archaeological remains, including major cemeteries of provincial governors, settlements, fortresses and beautifully preserved temples from different periods.
Mgr. et Mgr. Katarína Arias Kytnarová, PhD.,works as a researcher at the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, focusing on third-millennium material culture. Since 2007, she has regularly participated in the institute's excavations of royal family and high officials' cemeteries at Abusir, as well as international projects at Abu Ghurab and Edfu.
