About the lecture
Magic was inseparable from everyday life in ancient Egypt. From pregnancy and birth through daily joys and worries to death and rebirth, the lives of ordinary people and powerful pharaohs alike were shaped by magic, charms and spells. Even deities and cosmic forces could be influenced by the right incantations. Temple and tomb rituals were therefore often filled with spells, and priests acted as magicians. What did Egyptian incantations sound like, how were they used, and is there evidence of curses? What magical tools did Egyptians employ, and what did their wands look like? Has any ancient Egyptian magic survived to the present?
Mgr. Veronika Dubcová, PhD., graduated in Classical Archaeology from Trnava University and in Egyptology from the University of Vienna, where she earned her doctorate at the Institute of Classical Archaeology. She is a board member of the Aigyptos Foundation and a researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Slovak Academy of Sciences. Her interests include the Aegean Bronze Age, Egypt's Second Intermediate Period and New Kingdom, and the history, material culture and intercultural relations of the Bronze Age eastern Mediterranean. Since 2008, she has belonged to the Polish-Slovak mission at Tell el-Retaba.
