About the lecture
The methods of nineteenth-century plunderers of Egyptian antiquities, such as Belzoni and Drovetti, are well known. This lecture instead examines several archaeologists working in Egypt in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who were internationally renowned representatives of serious scholarship in their own time. In its name, they used methods then considered appropriate but increasingly troubling as archaeology developed. We conclude with a look at research today.
Mgr. et Mgr. Martin Odler is a doctoral researcher and research staff member at the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, and a board member of the Slovak Aigyptos Foundation. He studies ancient Egyptian metalworking and metal use, as well as the history of Egyptian archaeology.
