About the lecture
PhDr. Ing. Tomáš Gál, PhD., studied Computer Science, Religious Studies and Cognitive Science. He teaches courses and supervises student research at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, Comenius University in Bratislava. His research focuses on rationality and its limits and on altered states of consciousness.
Abstract: Belief is a profoundly human phenomenon affecting every area of life. It shapes action, morality and even perception of our surroundings. Individual beliefs need not be internally consistent: people can believe mutually contradictory things. This lecture shows how the human capacity for belief can be studied scientifically and offers a glimpse of the diversity of things people believe. It also explains why belief is indispensable and why people cannot think and act without believing something. Rather than analysing a particular religion, ideology or worldview, it focuses on features shared by different objects of belief.
