About the lecture
Ing. Mgr. et Mgr. Miroslav Vrzal is a doctoral researcher at the Department of Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. His interests include the sociology of religion, new religious movements and alternative spiritualities, particularly Satanism; religion in Czechia; secularisation, post-secularity and the sociology of science. He also studies metal music and its subculture academically.
Abstract: The lecture examines contemporary Satanism. It first introduces the historical context and inspirations of modern Satanism, whose emergence can be associated with the founding of the Church of Satan in the late 1960s. It then considers public perceptions, particularly Satanic panic. Contemporary forms are explored through the beliefs and practices of selected organisations and groups, including the Church of Satan, Temple of Set, The Satanic Temple, Order of Nine Angles and Church of Azazel. Part of the lecture also addresses Satanic expression in metal music, especially black metal, where it is an important element.
