About the lecture
Mgr. Tibor Sedláček, PhD., studied Religious Studies at the Department of Comparative Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts, Comenius University in Bratislava, where he also teaches part-time. He earned his doctorate at the Department of Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno. He researches ancient Near Eastern religions, iconography and relationships between images and texts, specialising in Mesopotamia and the Hurrians. He has published scholarly and popular-science articles and the book Doklady raného náboženstva Churritov v starovekom Urkeši (Evidence of Early Hurrian Religion at Ancient Urkesh).
Abstract: The lecture introduces a large underground structure discovered at Tell Mozan, ancient Urkesh, in present-day north-eastern Syria. It focuses on the numerous bones of several animal species and other intriguing objects found within it. Ancient written sources describing bloody rituals directed towards the underworld will also be presented. These texts help support the conclusion that the Urkesh structure served a ritual function and was probably used to communicate with underworld deities for specific purposes.
