About the lecture
Milan Fujda is an assistant professor at the Department of Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno. He has studied transformations of tradition during social modernisation and now focuses mainly on ethnographic research into how people manage uncertainty. He seeks ways for religious studies to stop exoticising religious people and their activities, exploring the practical rationality of devotion and its significance in everyday life.
A wall painting must occasionally be repainted to prevent it fading away. The same is true of tradition: to survive, it must constantly change. This is its paradox. It appears timeless, firm and unchanging, yet if it stops changing it disappears with older people's memories or becomes like old bones displayed in a museum. Every change transforms both the tradition and those who value it. Tradition is political: people continually seek to claim it for their own side, while others cherish it equally but have different plans. What do we do when we invoke tradition? How do we use it, and why does it matter so much? These questions guide the lecture ‘Tradition as a Set of Resources for Social Mobilisation, or How to Talk Meaningfully about Religion’.
