Ancient Egypt and the Romans

Mgr. Tatiana Votroubeková studied Religious Studies and Classical Archaeology at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, where she is a doctoral researcher at the Institute of Classical Archaeology. She focuses on Etruscan and Roman archaeology and ancient religions. She has regularly joined excavations in Italy since 2013 and has been a member of the Czech archaeological expedition in Uzbekistan since 2017.

Ancient Egypt and the Romans
Contacts between ancient Egypt and Italy were initially limited to imported luxury goods. From the Hellenistic period, interest in Egypt, its art and spiritual traditions deepened. Once Egypt became part of the Roman Empire, the Romans succumbed to Egyptomania. Eastern religious cults in their Hellenised forms found enthusiastic audiences among both aristocrats and ordinary people and became fashionable. What fascinated the Romans so much about Egypt? One clue is that people today are not so different from the ancient Romans.
