About the lecture

Mgr. Marie Peterková Hlouchová studied Egyptology and History at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, where, at the time of the lecture, she was pursuing doctoral studies in Egyptology. She researches Old Kingdom religion and first-millennium BCE wooden coffins found at Abusir. She has participated in expeditions to Egypt and Sudan since 2015, contributes to the Czech Institute of Egyptology's archive database and is an editor of Pražské egyptologické studie.
Religion played a central role in ancient Egypt. The Greek historian Herodotus even called the Egyptians the most devout people of his time. Belief in the gods permeated every aspect of life; in turn, religion grew out of people's surroundings and daily challenges.
The lecture introduces the main characteristics of religion in the land of the Nile and explores how people perceived, depicted and named their gods.
