About the lecture
Mgr. Martin Odler is a doctoral researcher at the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, studying material culture, especially copper artefacts. He regularly joins excavations at and around the Abusir pyramid field, serves on the board of the Aigyptos Foundation and belongs to the Polish-Slovak team investigating Tell el-Retaba in the eastern Delta.

Who Built the Egyptian Pyramids?
The pyramids are fascinating achievements of ancient Egyptian civilisation, built by human hands. This lecture explores the rich evidence now available about their builders, both professional master builders and men called up for heavy labour. We will discuss recently discovered papyri from Wadi el-Jarf that describe construction of the largest pyramid, Khufu's, during the Fourth Dynasty. Finally, we will learn how a forthcoming project at the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, will advance knowledge of the copper metallurgy used by Fourth-Dynasty pyramid workers at Giza.
