invite you to the interdisciplinary academic conferenceA Woman on the Throne and Women without Thronesmarking the 300th anniversary of the birth of Maria Theresa. The conference will take place on
29 November 2017
at the Cultural and Educational Centre of the State Scientific Library in Košice, Pribinova 1.
Maria Theresaranks among the most significant female rulers and figures in history. Her numerous reforms also had a positive influence on social and cultural development in what is now Slovakia.
Many remarkable women lived in present-day Slovakia and Central Europe and succeeded in asserting their ideas and views in a male-dominated patriarchal society. These‘women without thrones’receive little attention in academic circles, are absent from history textbooks and remain almost unknown to the wider public. The conference opens a space for discussing their lives and achievements.
The conference is divided into two sessions:
The first sessionis dedicated to Maria Theresa on the 300th anniversary of her birth.
The second sessionis open to significant female figures in Slovak and Central European history across all periods.
The conference aims to contribute to academic and interdisciplinary discussion of the life, work and legacy of Maria Theresa on this major anniversary.
It also aims to give researchers from all disciplines an opportunity to present their findings and perspectives on individual women and women's collectives whose work, lives and influence played an important role in local, regional and wider history in Slovakia and Central Europe.
Main themes:
– Maria Theresa as a woman, wife and mother.
– Maria Theresa as a ruler and reformer: perceptions of contemporary rulers, colleagues and other figures of her time.
– Maria Theresa: her legacy and historical memory.
– Women without thrones: remarkable women and their influence on European and Slovak history.
– Women without thrones: processes of emancipation in Central Europe.
– Women without thrones: Slovak writers, painters, scientists and others whose work left its mark on Slovak and Central European history.
– Forgotten local historical figures in Slovakia.
Papers will be published in peer-reviewed conference proceedings.
